The most exciting part of homeschooling is the flexibility of how to spend your days as a family. It can also sometimes be the most challenging! Children are constantly growing and changing so as parents, we must be willing to adapt to their needs. In our family, we try to match our routines with their current interests.
This fall kicked off our first time having a more structured routine to our days. Almost a month in, I’m enjoying it and I believe the kids are too. Here’s our schedule:
- Monday – Ukulele lesson for our 7-year-old. We started her lessons a year ago and her teacher is incredibly encouraging. We usually pick our requested library books too.
- Tuesday – Homeschool co-op that meets the first and third week. We learn about a topic together with the kids divided into age groups. Our first topic was volcanoes and everyone had so much fun! This month we’re learning about birds. On the opposite weeks, we have a counseling session.
- Wednesday – Farm School because our oldest currently wants to be a farmer! We began with both kids in this drop off program, but our 4-year-old decided she isn’t quite ready to be away from us for 4 hours. I love that we pay in 6-week sessions so we can adapt if needed and I look forward to having some one-on-one time with her coming up.
- Thursday – Family fun day or let’s be honest, sometimes it’s get things done day! Just having a day we don’t have to be anywhere by a certain time is what we truly need.
- Friday – Wild + Free Adventure group. This is the homeschool group we’ve been a part of for 3 years that has really shaped our friendships and journey! We meet up at parks, host family book clubs, and participate in local seasonal activities, plus the occasional mom’s night that we all need!
In addition, I work evenings and weekends in a restaurant and we fit in more fun wherever we can! Our girls are really interested in starting a dance class so we’re hoping to add that in at some point. It’s always a balance, not taking on too much at once. How’s your routine working out for you so far?
